Though strength is important, it’s actually the slowest route to increasing your vertical.

You’ll want to include strength training in current or future workouts to maximize your vertical leap, but if you’re looking for the fastest route to 6-12+ Inches of Vertical Leap to get your first dunk, strength training is not it.

Like strength training, increasing your speed and explosive output can definitely help you jump higher. But increase your speed takes months to even years of work.

From conditioning to spring drills, to explosive weight lifting, speed training can be great for jumping higher over time, but it’s far from the fastest way to your first dunk.

Once your strength levels are at a safe level, you can add plyometrics to your vertical training for additional inches. Saying that, plyometrics aren’t only useless if you don’t have the correct strength levels and technique, but their down right DANGEROUS and can lead to actually losing vertical leap, or worst, INJURY.

Plyos should only be added to your training once your technique is perfect and you have the appropriate strength levels needed more such strenuous activity.

Understanding and leveraging proper approach acceleration is present in ALL elite jumpers. Knowing how to properly accelerate and increase speed into the jump from any position on the basketball court will not only increase your scoring, rebounding, blocking, and overall body control, but will ultimately help you jump much higher.

Improper Timing

Improper lower driving of your knee (one foot jump) or explosion (two foot jump) is a major jump leak.  If you ever find yourself jumping FORWARD instead of as high as you’d expect to jump, you likely are suffering from faulty lower drive in your jump.

Improper upper driving of your arms during your jump, whether 1 foot or 2 foot, is also a major jump leak.  If you ever find yourself jumping FORWARD or not as explosive as you’d expect to jump, you’re likely suffering from the faulty upper drive jump leak.

Faulty Upper Drive

One of the most common jump leaks is what we call burning tires.  This is when you chop or stutter your steps before plating to jump.  This is a major speed and timing fault that drastically lowers your vertical leap.  With proper training, this is a simple fix, with major increases to your jump.

Improper lean can make or break your overall jumping success.  Elite jumpers have a tall torso, contracted core, and slight forward lean going into their jump.  By having proper lean, you’ll easily increase your vertical leap, but improper lean during your run up (approach) can lead to lack of explosiveness and lower vertical leap output.

Approach Lean

Maintaining explosive dorsiflexion off of your one and two feet jumps is vital to reach maximum jump height. Dorsiflexion turns the bottom of your feet into the most powerful part of your body and creates the most force you’re physically capable of if done right. Having a proper punch pad to jump off of, is the equivalent to punching something with a balled up fist versus fingers first. Most athletes jump off their toes and that’s a MAJOR jump leak.

Proper Punch Pad

The Amortization Phase AKA the short moment/movement between your run up (approach) and leaving the ground (jumping).  You MUST maintain a tight core that allows this phase to occur as quickly but as controlled as possible.  Nearly all athletes are too slow within their amortization phase, leaving multiple inches of vertical leap on the table.

LEAK SEVEN:

Stability Break

The “Magic Step” is also known as a penultimate step.  An elongated stride leading into your “take off” (amortization phase) that will guarantee you max explosive output and speed.  A proper penultimate step alone is capable of adding 6+ inches to your vertical leap INSTANTLY.  Sadly, nearly ALL athletes are never taught about the penultimate step, and simply don’t realize they have 6+ inches of vertical leap inside of them.

Lack Magic Step

Your body follows your head, your head follows your eyes.  By focusing your line of sight on one specific thing- you’ll quickly gain inches on your vertical.  When athletes jump, they often find themselves looking in one of 3 places when they leave the ground. Two of the three lead to a LOSS of vertical leap, while one leads to an INCREASE in your jump.

Improper Focal Point 

MCV aka Maximum Controlled Velocity is an understanding of maximum speed you need to reach going into your takeoff (amortization phase).   Your MCV is found through a series of drills, practice, and is constantly changing as you gain better technique and strength. Increasing the speed of your MCV over time leads to increased vertical leap consistently.
